Why this matters here
A good share of the people we exist to serve live with a disability, some of it service-connected. A site that is hard to read, hard to operate, or unusable with assistive technology is a site that turns away exactly the people we built it for. So this is not a box to tick.
What we have done
- Real headings, lists, landmarks and form labels, so screen readers can navigate the page structure rather than guess at it.
- Every control reachable and operable by keyboard, with a visible focus outline. The menu closes on Escape and returns focus to the button that opened it.
- Text contrast checked by calculation, not by eye. Where text sits over a photograph the image is darkened enough that even its brightest pixel clears the AA threshold.
- Tap targets of at least 44 by 44 pixels on phones.
- All motion, including scroll animations and the marquee, is switched off for anyone whose system asks to reduce motion.
- Descriptive alt text on meaningful images. Decorative images are hidden from assistive technology instead of being announced.
- The state map is an enhancement, not the only route. Every state is also a plain text link, so the page works without JavaScript and without a pointing device.
- Layouts reflow to a single column on small screens with no horizontal scrolling.
What is not right yet
Being honest about the gaps is more useful than claiming full compliance:
- The site has not yet been tested with real screen reader users, only with automated checks and manual keyboard testing.
- Some event photographs are older and low resolution, and a few have text baked into the image where it cannot be read aloud.
- Forms are not connected yet, so their error handling and confirmation messages have not been built or tested.
- We have not yet audited the documents and external sites we link to. Once you follow a link to a government or third-party service, its accessibility is outside our control.
